Why Native Plants Matter

Our friends and peers over at Green & Open Somerville wrote a very informative article outlining why now more than ever we need and depend on Native Plants! Read the article below. (Jean is one signers listed) If you have been following along with us for some time, you know that Native Plants are key components to ecological restoration, carbon sequestration, biodiversity and a thriving food web, beauty, and so much more.

On April 26th, the Boston Globe published an article by Martha Leb Molnar titled “Got weeds? Read this before you whack them.” Green & Open Somerville members Renée Scott (NOFA/Mass Pollinator Network) , Claire O’Neil (Earthwise Aware), Amy Mertl (Lesley University), and Tori Antonino wrote this article as a response, but The Boston Globe rejected it. Many members of other community environmental grassroots organizations sign and agreed that the Boston Globe published the article irresponsibly, and the rebuttal is in fact what we would like to focus on. “…we felt was irresponsible in its lack of understanding about the importance of native plant species to ecological health, and promotion of non-native species.”

Deepen your understanding below of why native plants matter!
