Dead Trees are Vital to Biodiversity

Happy Fall! As you know, fall is a great time to plant natives. By planting now, native plants have time to establish root systems before winter hits, rewarding you with spring and summer blooms next year. As we enter this new season, we were reading famed horticulturist and native plant guru Rebecca McMackin’s newsletter and were directed to a wonderful Margaret Roach (New York Times) article from May about snags. Snags as you may not be familiar with, are dead trees. This article delves into one man’s mission to protect dead trees in the landscape. First of all, if you don’t know who Rebecca McMackin is check out her Ted Talk on Biodiversity (linked below) as an introduction. Secondly, you can read Margaret’s article about Basil Camu and his mission to save dying trees in North Carolina and Beyond.
